The Vis Collective, led by Dr. Miriah Meyer from the Division of Media and Information Technology at Linköping University (LiU), is a research group exploring the intersection of visualizations, data, and society. The group, which also includes PhD student Derya Akbaba and Master of Design students Camilla Svensson and Claudia Torelli, has initiated a collaboration with Östergötlands Stadsmission to understand and enhance their impact on young women through the program Power in Da Hood.
Workshop at Wadströms Exploranation Laboratory
Recently, the Vis Collective and Östergötlands Stadsmission organized a series of workshops at the Wadströms Exploranation Laboratory at Visualiseringscenter C. Twelve young women participated and were given a tour of the center, highlighting how data can be used to communicate important societal issues. Under the guidance of Martin Callmeryd and Samiya Mohamed from Stadsmissionen, the participants learned about data and visualization techniques, equipping them with new tools to express themselves
A Promising Future
This collaboration between the Vis Collective and Östergötlands Stadsmission is just the beginning. The results from these workshops will be further developed during the fall as a new part of Visual City, where the collaboration’s work on “Data Empowerment” will be highlighted as an alternative perspective on what counts as data. The collaboration between the Vis Collective and Östergötlands Stadsmission demonstrates that when academia and social organizations come together, they can create powerful tools for social change. By leveraging the potential of data and visualization, they are taking a significant step toward a more just and enlightened world.
