Keynote & AW: The Hidden History of Women in Science Reform

The event is held in English.

Recent years have seen growing emphasis on efforts to reform science. “Science reform” is a movement that broadly aims to enhance research transparency, robustness, and accountability of researchers. Prompted by concerns over fraud and questionable research practices that emerged in the 2010s, science reform has been framed as a new approach to research in the social sciences. However, as an intellectual pursuit, it is far from new.

Throughout history, women in science have long practiced and promoted principles now hailed as innovative, although their contributions are often left out of mainstream narratives. This erasure is troubling, especially as feminist scholars have critiqued the increasingly exclusionary culture of mainstream science reform.

This talk traces the overlooked contributions of five pioneering women: Mary Whiton Calkins and her replication efforts in the 1890s; Helen Bradford Thompson Woolley, who advocated for analytical precision in the 1910s; Alice Bryan’s 1940s adversarial collaboration; Carolyn Wood Sherif’s meta-scientific work in the 1960s; and Leonore Tiefer’s promotion of conflict of interest declarations in sex research in the 2000s.

Madeleine will show how their contributions laid important intellectual foundations for what is now called contemporary science reform. In doing so, she highlights and celebrate a lineage of feminist scientific work that has always cared about openness, ethics, and equity.

This event is hosted by Visual Digital Future Profile in C-research/MIT, Linköping University.
